About 24 million tonnes of tailings/slimes were generated during 1997 98 from the concentrators and mineral treatment plants installed in copper, lead and zinc, gold, iron ore, chromite and manganese ore mines. Table 46.1 shows mineral wise quantities of tailings/slimes generated during 1999 2000 in India. Water Pollution:
Lead is extracted from ores dug from under ground mines. Of the more than 60 minerals that contain lead, only 3 galena, cerussite and anglesite are commercially viable. Usually, lead is found in conjunction with other metals such as silver and zinc. Lead materials are mined as a by product of these other more valuable metals.
Jul 09, 2020· As recently as 1990, the U.S. was the worlds number one producer of minerals. Today, it is in seventh place. Even though the nation has vast mineral reserves worth trillions of dollars, America is now 100% dependent on imports for some 17 key minerals, and, for another 29, over half of domestic needs are imported.
The reaction of the final step of extraction of zinc is \ Since, the boiling point of Zinc is way back at 1180 K, the zinc formed immediately vaporizes and distills over leaving behind non volatile impurities such as Cadmium, Lead and Iron. This gas containing zinc vapours is collected and cooled to yield solid zinc.
The two principal minerals containing lead and zinc are galena and sphalerite. These two minerals are frequently found together along with other sulfide minerals, but one or the other may be predominant. Galena may contain small amounts of impurities including the precious metal silver, usually in the form of a sulfide.
zinc during the 35 year period are shown individually . Aluminum consumption increased by more than three times, the most dramatic increase of the nonferrous metals, while copper and zinc consumption increased about twofold. Lead consumption increased the least during the period, about one and a half times.Cited by: 17
Silver and cadmium are separated from lead and zinc, respectively, in the subsequent metal extraction processes. The Broken Hill mines contain 6% lead and 10% zinc and flotation concentrates the ore into two streams, a lead concentrate containing 70% lead and a zinc concentrate containing 50% zinc.
